Domaine Usseglio et Fils

Domaine Usseglio et Fils, not to be confused with Raymond Usseglio (which is a different winery owned by Pierre's brother,) was founded in 1948 by Francis Usseglio. Francis moved to the Rhone from Italy in 1931. Francis had two sons, Pierre and Raymond.

Pierre took over this domaine and his brother Raymond created his winery in 1960, using his name which is how you have two different Usseglio wines in the Southern Rhone Valley. The children of Pierre Usseglio, Jean-Pierre and Thierry started managing the estate. That change took place in 1999. One of the first changes the new generation of owners did was begin to completely destem he  grapes  starting with the 2001 vintage.

Today, Domaine Usseglio et Fils is known for its exceptional wines, which are made using traditional winemaking methods and feature a blend of grape varieties, including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and others. The winery produces a range of wines, from its flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape to more affordable Côtes du Rhône blends, and has earned numerous awards and accolades for its work.

Throughout its history, the Domaine has remained committed to producing wines that reflect the unique character of the southern Rhône Valley, while also embracing modern winemaking practices and techniques. Today, the winery continues to be run by the Usseglio family, with Jean-Pierre's son, Mickaël, leading the winemaking operation, and Gregory leading the marketing efforts.

Join us this week as we feature a flight of THREE Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that will delight all of the senses!

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

"Tradition" 2019

$60 btl/retail

SUMMARY: Superb red wine that embodies the authentic taste of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the Rhône Valley in France. This wine is made with a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes, which have been carefully cultivated to produce a rich, complex flavor profile. The wine has a deep ruby color and aromas of dark fruit, spice, and herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a velvety texture and flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and hints of leather and pepper. This wine is perfect for pairing with a range of dishes or for enjoying on its own as a sophisticated and delicious wine experience.

VARIETAL/WINEMAKING: 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 10% Cinsault. Grapes are harvested and selected manually with yields as low as 20-25hl/ha according to vintage conditions, mostly destemmed then fermented separately, and the wine is aged 12 months, half in oak foudre and half in concrete tank.

TASTING NOTE: Vivid purple hue in the glass with fresh herbs, spice box, flowers and dark cherries that pop easily on the nose, along with a peppery garrigue Soft in texture, with layers of luscious sweet cherries, kirsch and peppery dark cocoa on the back end, this is going to be great on release and it should also be able to age for over a decade with ease.

PAIRING SUGGESTION: Grilled pork chops with a spicy rub are an excellent pairing for this 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine's spicy notes complement the heat in the rub, while its fruitiness balances the pork's sweetness.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

"Cuvée de mon Aïeul" 2019

$129 btl/retail

SUMMARY: An exceptional wine that will transport you to the rolling hills of Southern France. This full-bodied wine is made with a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah grapes, producing a deep ruby color with a nose of black fruits, tobacco, and spices. The palate is rich and intense with notes of black cherry, blackberry, and licorice, backed by firm tannins and a long finish. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, this wine will continue to develop over the next 10 years.

VARIETAL/WINEMAKING: 100% Grenache from 75- to 90-year-old vines that grow in different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone). 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids.

TASTING NOTE:  Incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provençal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish- long & like velvet!. A wine of incredibly purity, precision, and elegance, yet also with power and opulence. A sensational stunner in its youth, the wine will likely improve through 2035 and hold further.

PAIRING SUGGESTION: This 100% Grenache Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine pairs well with roasted lamb. The wine's fruity & spicy notes complement the lamb's richness and earthiness, while its tannins help cut through the meat's fat.

Domaine Pierre Usegglio et Fils

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

"Reserve des Deux Freres" 2020

$169 btl/retail

SUMMARY: A luxurious red wine that embodies the essence of French winemaking. It is made from a blend of Grenache, & Syrah grapes grown in the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the Rhône Valley. This wine boasts a deep ruby color, with aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and a hint of spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and vanilla, with a long, smooth finish.

VARIETAL/WINEMAKING:  85% Grenache and 15% Serine Syrah from Charbonniere. Aged in new barrels.

TASTING NOTE: This CNdP boasts a killer nose of blackberries, cassis, spicy wood, graphite, and ground pepper... among other Provençal nuances. One of the darkest colored, and most complete wines of the vintage, the wine is equally dark on the palate. Pure, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it has building yet perfectly ripe tannins, the vintage’s more elegant, and streamlined style. The depth of flavor, length and freshness does not quit on the finish.

PAIRING SUGGESTION: Pairs well with ratatouille, a vegetable stew made with eggplant, zucchini, peppers, and tomatoes. The wine's acidity helps cut through the dish's richness, while its fruitiness complements the vegetables' sweetness. A classic combo!
