12/15 PETIT WEEK IN WINE - The Boillot Family from Burgundy

PETIT WEEK IN WINE | December 15 - December 18 2022

This Week's Flight Showcase:

The Boillot Family from Burgundy

Two boutique Burgundy estates

and their local connection to CLT...

Season's Greetings-

The countdown is on: 10 days until Christmas!

We have a very special treat for you this week, join us as we feature FOUR great red wines from the two brothers Boillot, Pierre & Louis, who run two separate BURGUNDY DOMAINES:

Lucien Boillot et Fils in Gevery-Chambertin and Louis Boillot et Fils in Chambolle-Musigny.

Yes, you heard right, it's THAT time of year when we bring out the BEST from Burgundy and two notable estates we visited on our trip just two months ago!

The Boillot family has a long history in Burgundy dating back to François Boillot in the early 1800s when he established his winery in the small, storied village of Volnay. Since then, the family descendants have been involved in the wine business.... from multiple Domaines in Burgundy to an early pioneer of California viticulture (Read: Paul Masson) to our very own Jeremie Copeland (great-great-great-great-grandson of François)!

As mentioned, we had the pleasure of visiting with both Pierre and Louis in October during our annual Burgundy trip. We sampled the whole line-up of new releases and are excited to bring these very limited to the tasting room this weekend!

Note for insider, Burgundy lovers: Shoot me an email if you'd like to learn more about the Premier Cru bottlings also just in - We have a few available for you passionatos out there...

So, even though the wine world oftentimes feels immense, the Boillot family's connection to not only Charlotte, but Petit Philippe makes this an extra special opportunity to sample fine Burgundies from these very special producers. I have seen first-hand how the Boillot family takes great pride in the tradition & culture of Burgundy while letting each terroir come through on all of their wines.

I welcome you to stop by for our Boillot Tasting Flight this weekend, featuring their Bourgogne Rouge, two famed villages (Chambolle-Musigny & Gevrey-Chambertin), and one Beaujolais from Clément Boillot (the next generation of Boillot winemakers).

Finally, the shop looks like the North Pole and Santa's elves are busy! Let us serve you with a unique and compelling holiday gift this season. Below find a few wine & stemware options we have curated to help with the most discerning gift recipient. Give us a call at 704-332-9910 or email for customized package options and special pricing bundles.

Further details on the tasting flight and a primer on both Boillot Domaines are below.

See you soon. Stay warm, stay dry and drink more red burgundy.

Cheers!

Mark

P.S. As you are enjoying the flight this weekend, ask Jeremie to share some childhood stories of running around the vineyards of Burgundy.... :0)

DOMAINE LUCIEN BOILLOT ET FILS

Pierre Boillot is a rare master of both the Côtes de Beaune and the Côtes de Nuits–not only does he have the vineyards but also the savoir-faire and skill. Pierre inherited this domaine from his father Lucien, whose name it still carries. Pierre worked together with his brother Louis for years, but a few years ago they parted ways and split up the family holdings. Pierre’s talent has become much more evident as he has had full control over this domaine, and in addition to retaining the original cellars in Gevrey-Chambertin, Pierre has instituted a rigorous revitalizing of the soils and vines in all of his vineyards.

Pierre inherited very old vines from his father in the Côtes de Nuits and from his great-grandfather Henri Boillot, who was originally from Volnay, in the Côtes de Beaune. Many of his vineyards are under-appreciated treasures: Volnay Les Angles, which was originally classified as one of the top premier cru sites in Volnay in the 19th century, Pommard Croix Noires right below Rugiens, Gevrey Cherbaudes right next to Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru and Gevrey Corbeaux right next to Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. Every wine is a classic representation of its appellation–from Volnay and Pommard to Gevrey and Nuits-Saint-Georges, as Pierre’s work in the cellars is geared towards transparent, terroir-driven wines of purity and finesse. He is not, however, against a rich, plump, lusciousness in his reds.

DOMAINE LOUIS BOILLOT ET FILS

Louis Boillot’s emerging position in the Burgundy firmament is not accidental. Despite having only launched his domaine in 2002, he came armed with some of the oldest and best situated vineyards in Burgundy—thanks to four generations of Boillots having acquired prime sites in Volnay and Gevrey Chambertin. Louis’ domaine has quietly become one of the most admired small estates in the Côte d’Or. The turning point came in the mid-2000s, when he and his partner—the supremely talented Ghislaine Barthod—built a cave together in Chambolle-Musigny. This brought two of Burgundy’s most gifted winemakers together—working and tasting side by side—with the alchemy you’d expect.

The vineyard management was also combined, with Louis responsible for not only his own vines, but those of Ghislaine as well. It’s no wonder Ghislaine lets Louis take care of her vines. He’s a master with more than 30 years of experience—employing the minimum of interventions, and meticulously pruning for balanced yields. His winemaking is equally timeless, featuring extended, gentle extractions and a limited use of new barrels. In the years since his move to Chambolle, there has been a wildly impressive advance in the stature of Boillot’s wines. It has been a change marked not by flash or dazzle, but by an inexorable march towards increasingly refined and transparent wines.

Today, as in the past, at the heart of his style is a profound respect for the terroir of his old vines. Between Louis and Ghislaine, there are 26 different cuvées, of which 17 are premier cru. Louis and Ghislaine’s son Clément stands to inherit both domaines one day, creating a single estate of dizzying stature. The wines that Louis makes from his priceless vines are like Burgundy used to be: gentle, subtle, pure, precise and highly nuanced, their complexity and sensuality growing with age.

And, starting in 2014, Louis and Clément brought their patient, balanced approach to the Beaujolais region. Eschewing flash or dazzle, Clément aims to slowly refine the wines and traditions of these terroirs just as his father did in Burgundy over the preceding 20 years.

Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils

Bourgogne Rouge 2020

Burgundy, FR

$53/btl retail

Pierre’s Bourgogne has lush fruit and structure from Gevrey and the floral, soft touch of Volnay that combine as a wonderful homage to Boillot ancestors and Burgundy at large.

Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir sourced from Gevrey-Chambertin (2/3) in the Côte de Nuits and Volnay (1/3) in the Côte de Beaune. On average vines are 50+ years of age. Wines are aged for 16 to 18 months depending on the vintage.

Taste: Light ruby in color with aromas of raspberry, cherry, and floral hints that appear with some aeration. Elegant with a light to medium body and a palate with keen acidity. The finish hints at some dried earth. A delight & easy to pair food wine.

Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils

Chambolle-Musigny 2020

Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, FR

$99/btl retail

This Chambolle-Musigny shares much of the suppleness, pure fruit and ripe tannins as other Burgundies in Louis' portfolio, but with added feminine elegance & grace.

Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir from 40-year-old vines in the villages portion of Beaux Bruns within Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits.

Taste: Very pretty with ruby & luminous highlights in the glass. Attractive fresh aromas of cool red berries, spice and lavender give way to succulent, round and generously proportioned flavors that are somewhat less mineral-driven than previous vintages. A very enjoyable (and perhaps slightly austere) finale with notes of violet, light spice, and cherry skins.

These two men formed a special collaboration by sending letters and samples of wine to each other. Victor was a key aide to Mr. Pasteur, advising him about the p
