12/8 PETIT WEEK IN WINE - Drew Family Wines

PETIT WEEK IN WINE | December 7 - December 11 2022

This Week's Flight Showcase:

The countdown is on: 17 days until Christmas!

The popular demand of the Drew Fog-Eater Pinot Noir on our Top 10 Thanksgiving list "twisted our arm" to featuring a couple of other standout Drew wines for the FULL REVIEW this week.

You might recall from a previous communication that Jason Drew is in my TOP-3 favorite domestic Pinot producers of the year - full stop. He has consistently proven to be a reliable blue-chip source of the finest & most site transparent wines from high elevation, coastal influenced vineyards. When you think of domestic Pinot & Chardonnay, think of Anderson Valley on the Mendocino ridge and think Drew wines!

These wines are very expressive at the moment... from the Bahl Briney Chardonnay that offers a light richness and honeydew-melon flavors that are followed by good citrus notes, to the Faite de Mer Pinot Noir with its layers of nuance & charismatic palate. Each wine featured on the weekly flight pushes the limits of precision, detail, and finesse.

I welcome you to stop by for our Drew Tasting Flight, and while you are here feel free to ask about how we can help you with your holiday gifts. Below are a few wine & stemware options we have curated to aid with your gifting decision making. Always happy to assist with customizations- just give us a call at 704-332-9910.

See you soon for great gifting ideas this season!

Jason and Molly Drew started Drew in 2000 with a clear pursuit in mind: to craft small lot, cool climate wines that express site distinction and traditional varietal character.  Their moment came when they stumbled upon an old 26 acre apple orchard within the Mendocino Ridge Appellation.  While others saw a daunting project in this old forgotten orchard, Jason and Molly saw ancient oceanic soils, south facing slopes at 1250 ft elevation, putting them just above the fogline and a true coastal climate, with the ocean a mere 3.3 miles away. It didn't take long for them to decide to leap and leap they did. The Drew estate winery at Faîte De Mer Farm was born.

The eight acre estate vineyard was planted to a collection of California heritage field selections, suitcase selections and several Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. Additionally, two acres of Chardonnay were added along with a small truffle orchard to accompany the remaining 14 acre apple orchard. Faîte De Mer Farm is certified organic, continueing a 30 plus year tradition of farming to this standard on this site.

Jason is a true vigneron having spent many years honing his skillset in vineyard farming and winemaking, having studied in both the northern and southern hemispheres, in Agroecology, Viticulture and a Graduate Degree in Enology from the University of Adelaide. He has worked for several noteable northern and central California estate wineries and vineyards including St Supery alongside Kirk Grace as well as Joseph Phelps with Craig Williams, Luna with John Kongsgaard, Carmenet with Jeff Baker, Corison with Cathy Corison and Babcock Vineyards with Brian Babcock, totalling 29 years in the industry.

Join us this week as we will be featuring three Drew Family wines from the Mendocino Ridge & Anderson Valley.

Drew 'Bahl Briney' Chardonnay 2020

Anderson Valley, California

$47/btl retail

Bahl Briney hails from Boontling lore, a local slang dialect unique to Anderson Valley. Bahl means excellent quality and Briney translates to coastal origins

Varietal: 100% Chardonnay sourced from two cool climate organically farmed sites on opposite sides of Anderson Valley.

Taste: Light-gold in the glass, this Chardonnay opens with a vanilla, oak, and butterscotch bouquet with hints of poached pear. The entry is fresh and Vibrant with citrus, stone fruits and wet stones with a touch of salinity hinting at the soils oceanic origins. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with a mouthfeel that is round and balanced. Hints of chalky minerality and lemon are also present and lead into a dry finish with flavors that linger and last for quite a while.

Drew 'Faîte De Mer' Pinot Noir 2019

Mendocino Ridge, California

$60/btl retail

Lighter in weight than previous vintages, the 2019 Faîte de Mer Pinot Noir is incredibly layered with savory wild raspberries, truffles and coastal forest after the rain.

Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir from Faîte de Mer Farm that is located a mere 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Fermented with 100% native yeast, 45% whole-cluster pressed & gravity racked twice. Aged in 95% Seasoned oak.

Taste: Pretty energetic red raspberry & cherry aromas & flavors along with nuanced spice and a sense of minerality. Excellent balance & finesse. After a bit of air in the glass the floral character starts to unfold. Proper acidity keeps your palate cleansed and wanting more. A very charismatic coastal Pinot Noir in a very ethereal package- more Burgundian in style thanks to Jason Drew's meticulous attention to details.

Drew GSM Blend 2020

Mendocino Ridge, California

$47/btl retail

The Drew GSM is a lean cool climate blend (primarily Syrah) showcasing the Mendocino Ridge coastal high-altitude terroir & Jason Drew's careful hand at the blending table.

Varietal: 85% Syrah, 5% Viognier, 5% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre from Valenti Ranch (70%), and Perli Vineyard (30%) within the Mendocino Ridge AVA. 45% whole cluster fermented with native yeast, gravity racked once and barrel aged for 11-months in neutral French oak.

Taste: This field planting is picked all all at once, and vinified together for a quietly impressive wine that wraps superfine tannins around deep flavors that range from ginger-spiced cookies to stewed blueberries, new leather and dark chocolate. It's big in terms of flavors & aromas, but this GSM is medium to full-bodied and offers a silky polished texture & finish.
