Description

“L-O” is Michel Vattan’s more layered, cellar-worthy expression of Sancerre—built from 60–80 year-old vines and shaped by a long, slow vinification that favors texture and complexity. The 2023 shows a richer, more enveloping side of Sauvignon Blanc: golden-toned fruit and candied citrus, subtle creamy notes, and a firm mineral backbone. It’s still unmistakably Sancerre, but with extra breadth and a more gastronomic feel—perfect for customers who want “Sancerre, but more.”

Why We Love It

This is the bottle for the customer who says: “I love Sancerre, but I want something with more depth.” Old vines + lees aging give “L-O” a more Burgundian texture while staying true to Sancerre’s mineral cut. It’s also a great hand-sell for Chardonnay lovers who want to explore Loire whites without sacrificing structure.

Winemaking

“L-O” is made with a deliberately slow, cool approach to preserve aromatic detail while building texture: neutral yeasts, cool temperatures toward the end of fermentation to slow yeast activity, and a long fermentation period (around five weeks). Daily stirring during fermentation followed by extended aging on fine lees helps create a richer mouthfeel and added complexity.

Serving & Pairing

Serve chilled (around 48–52°F).

Great pairings:

  • Roast chicken, turkey, or pork

  • Creamy goat cheese, aged chèvre, Comté

  • Roasted vegetables (mushrooms, squash, fennel)

  • Seared scallops or richer fish (halibut, cod)

  • Roasted meats and savory dishes where classic Sancerre might feel too lean

Estate Overview

Domaine Michel Vattan is a family-run Sancerre estate based in Maimbray (a hamlet of Sury-en-Vaux), northwest of the town of Sancerre. The domaine traces its roots to 1930, growing from a small mixed farm into a focused vineyard estate of roughly 9–10 hectares. Their sites span classic Sancerre terroirs—including limestone-rich hillsides—allowing them to craft multiple cuvées that highlight soil type and vine age, from bright, stony expressions to deeper, cellar-worthy bottlings like “L-O.”
