Tasting Notes

On the nose, fresh green apple, pear skin and a whisper of white flowers greet you; immediately beneath lies crushed blue‑slate minerality and a saline edge. The palate is lean and vibrant: grapefruit pith and white stone‑fruit flavors ride on bracing acidity, while the slate‑driven mid‑palate gives texture and tension. The finish is long, precise, anchored by a chalky minerality and a whisper of citrus zest — purely Mosel, purely site‑driven.

Vinification

The 2024 vintage here has resulted in wines of electric energy and crystalline purity. From vines rooted deep in the steep blue‑slate slopes, this Riesling shows fierce minerality, taut structure and dry‑to‑the‑bone style. It is fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and kept lean to let the rocky terroir shine through. The result is refined, vivacious and absolutely true to Mosel’s cooler‑climate character.

Key Details:

  • Style: Completely dry (Trocken) with razor-sharp acidity.

  • Soil & Terroir: Deeply rooted in Blauschieffer (blue slate), imparting the wine's signature flinty mineral feel.

  • Farming Practices: Sustainable with minimal intervention to allow authenticity of the site.

Why We Love It at Petit Philippe

This Riesling is a stunning expression of place: the steep slate slopes of the Mosel distilled into a bright, dry white wine with character and clarity. It’s perfect for those who appreciate minerality, elegance and a clean finish. Whether sipping now for its vivacity or cellaring for a few years to watch its complexity evolve, it’s a standout in our curated selection.

Serving & Pairing

Serve chilled at about 8‑10 °C (46‑50 °F). Given its high energy and fine acid backbone, it pairs brilliantly with fresh oysters, sushi, citrus‑marinated seafood, or a salad with lime‑zest vinaigrette. It also offers a brilliant foil to spicy Asian cuisine or lightly smoked fish - its minerality and lively acid cut through richness beautifully.

Drinking Window

Delightful now for its freshness and vibrant profile and best enjoyed 2025 through 2032. With cellaring it will develop deeper mineral complexity, subtle petrol notes and nuanced tertiary aromatics while retaining its bright core.

Estate Overview

Winemaker Ulli Stein, as well as Peter Stein, carries on his family’s Mosel legacy by cultivating some of the steepest blue‑slate vineyards in Sankt‑Aldegund with remarkable precision. His ‘Blauschiefer’ bottling is a calling card of slate‑intense terroir: ungrafted old vines, hand‑worked vineyards and a no‑frills approach that lets the site speak clearly.
