Description

Jean-Marc Seleque is a third-generation grower in Pierry who farms nine hectares across 45 parcels in seven villages. The 5 Terroirs draws from five named vineyard sites, some with vines planted in 1950, fermented entirely in old oak barrels, with three years on lees and just 2g/L dosage. This is the most ambitious Blanc de Blancs in the flight.

Quick Facts

  • Region: Pierry Premier Cru, Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, Vallée de la Marne, Champagne, France
  • Variety: 100% Chardonnay from five named vineyard parcels
  • Style: Blanc de Blancs, Extra Brut — bone dry, 2g/L residual sugar
  • Best For: Serious Champagne collectors, significant celebrations, cellar-worthy discovery, comparison with Pour 1
  • ABV: [Confirm from label]
  • Farming: Essentially organic, some biodynamic practices; soils worked mechanically and by horse

Jean-Marc Seleque draws from five named parcels — Vertus, Dizy, Épernay, Mardeuil, and Pierry — with vine ages ranging from 1959 to 1990, fermented entirely in old oak barrels with 20% from a perpetual solera reserve started in 2012. Three years on lees. No fining or filtration. 2g/L dosage. Compared to the Michel Gonet that opens this flight, both are Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs from 100% Chardonnay — but the complete barrel fermentation, old vine sourcing, and solera complexity produce something fundamentally different in texture and architecture. This is Blanc de Blancs built for attention.

Why We Love It

The 5 Terroirs is Jean-Marc Seleque’s clearest statement: that Chardonnay from five carefully chosen parcels, fermented entirely in old oak with no additions and a decade of solera reserve, produces something that cannot be replicated by any other method or any other set of sites. The vine ages here, some pushing 75 years, contribute concentration and precision that younger plantings cannot match. This is the bonus pour that reframes the flight.

Tasting Profile

Deep, architectural Blanc de Blancs with real textural weight and a long mineral finish that continues to develop in the glass.

  • Aroma: Toasted grain, candied lemon zest, white flowers, hazelnut, lemongrass, salted lemon, subtle smokiness
  • Palate (Flavor): Concentrated citrus oil, quince, green apple, honeyed depth from old-vine parcels; very dry
  • Structure & Finish (Mouthfeel): Medium-full body, racy acid, chalky dry extract, fine mousse from three years on lees, long saline finish with persistent smokiness

Winemaking

Fermented entirely in old oak barrels — every parcel, no stainless steel. Oak fermentation adds texture and integrative complexity across the five terroir components. Twenty percent from a perpetual solera reserve started in 2012, contributing consistent depth across releases. No fining or filtration. Three years on lees before disgorgement. Dosage at 2g/L.

Serving & Pairing

Serve at 48 to 52°F. Allow 15 minutes in the glass before the first sip.

Best with langoustine, crab bisque, seared foie gras, or richly prepared seafood. The barrel-fermented complexity handles richer preparations than most Blanc de Blancs.

Perfect For: significant celebrations, anniversary dinners, special occasion gifts, serious Champagne collectors, romantic evenings, milestone events, holiday entertaining, Champagne education pours

Estate Overview

Jean-Marc Seleque is the third generation of his family to make Champagne in Pierry, a Premier Cru village on the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay. His grandfather arrived from Poland in 1925 and established the vineyards; Jean-Marc returned to the domaine in 2008 with a clear vision for natural balance and terroir transparency, farming roughly 9 hectares across 45 parcels in seven villages with essentially organic practices and some biodynamic work — with soils cultivated in some parcels by horse. Grand Cru Selections, who also imports Michel Gonet, brings Seleque to our market. The 5 Terroirs is his most ambitious single cuvée and the most complete argument for what the Marne Valley’s old-vine Chardonnay sites can produce.

Terroir (Place)

The five parcels span the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay and Côte des Blancs on soils of silty clay, flinty clay, and chalk. Vertus 1er Cru “La Justice” (vines planted 1950) grows on pure chalk, producing the cuvée’s acid tension and mineral precision. Dizy 1er Cru “Moque-Bouteille” (1985) on clay-loam contributes body and structure. Épernay “Les Frileux” (1959) on silty clay over chalk adds aromatic complexity. Mardeuil “Les Basses Ronces” (1982) on flinty clay over chalk adds depth and mineral earthiness. Pierry 1er Cru “Les Tartières et Porgeons” (1985/1990) on flinty clay with chalky subsoil provides the precise mineral character that grounds the blend.
