- Variety: Syrah
- Style: Full-bodied red
- Best For: Cellaring, special occasions
Why We Stock It
Domaine Jamet sits at the top tier of Côte-Rôtie producers, and their 2023 shows the balance and aging potential that justify the region's reputation. This is a wine built to evolve, with the structure to hold its dark fruit and mineral character for decades. At this level, you're buying a benchmark expression of what great Syrah from steep terraced vineyards in the northern Rhône can be.
Tasting Profile
An elegant, tightly wound wine with dark berries and stone minerals at its core.
- Aroma: Dark berries, white pepper, floral notes, graphite, olive
- Palate: Blackberry, licorice, smoked meat, excellent freshness and minerality
- Structure & Finish: Silky tannins, long and persistent finish with peppery spice and smoky character
Winemaking
The wine is fermented in traditional fashion and aged in French oak, though the specifics of Jamet's regime are closely held. The house favors a restrained approach that lets the terroir and the grape speak rather than imposing oak.
Serving & Pairing
Serve between 62 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit; decant for thirty minutes to an hour if drinking now, or bottle age for several years. The wine's structure and smoky minerality suit rare beef, duck confit, and game birds. A casual pairing is a charcuterie board with strong cheeses; more formally, try it with lamb shoulder or venison.
The Estate
Domaine Jamet is a small, family-run grower in Ampuis, the historic heart of Côte-Rôtie. The estate has built its reputation on meticulous work in the steep, terraced vineyards, farming sustainably and keeping production deliberately limited.
Terroir
Côte-Rôtie, meaning the roasted slope, sits on the right bank of the Rhône north of Vienne. The terrain is steep schist and granite, with excellent southern exposure that ripens Syrah fully while the cooler nights preserve aromatic complexity and acidity. These conditions produce wines of unusual refinement and aging potential.
