Winemaking

Cos d'Estournel has been under the creative stewardship of Jean-Guillaume Prats for much of its modern reputation, though the estate is now guided by a team under the ownership of Michel Reybier, who acquired the property in 2000. The winemaking philosophy here is one of precision and restraint — coaxing the maximum expression of Saint-Estèphe's terroir through meticulous sorting, parcel-by-parcel vinification, and judicious use of new oak that supports rather than dominates the wine.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Cos d'Estournel opens with a beautifully composed nose of ripe cassis, dark plum, and crushed blackcurrant, underscored by the estate's signature graphite minerality and a whisper of cedarwood. On the palate, the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend shows its vintage — a year of exceptional ripeness balanced by natural freshness — with layered flavors of black fruit, dried tobacco leaf, and finely integrated oak spice. The tannins are polished and architectural without being austere, building toward a finish of impressive length and cool mineral precision. This is a wine of genuine depth that rewards patience; give it a few more years and it will open into something truly memorable.

Producer

Classified as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux classification, Cos d'Estournel is one of the appellation's most recognizable estates, distinguished by its extraordinary orientalist château — complete with pagoda towers — perched on a gravel rise overlooking Château Lafite Rothschild across the Gironde estuary. The estate farms roughly 91 hectares of vines and has invested heavily in a state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery that allows for precise, gentle handling of fruit. Viticulture is managed with increasing attention to sustainability, including significant work toward reducing the estate's environmental footprint.

Terroir

Saint-Estèphe sits at the northern tip of the Haut-Médoc on Bordeaux's Left Bank, and Cos d'Estournel's vineyards benefit from some of the finest gravel and clay-limestone soils the appellation has to offer — a combination that tempers ripeness with structure and lends the wines their characteristic mineral backbone. The estate's namesake hill, "cos" meaning a place of pebbles in Gascon dialect, provides exceptional drainage and heat retention, while proximity to the Gironde moderates the maritime climate. Compared to its neighbors to the south, Saint-Estèphe's higher clay content contributes to a slightly firmer tannic profile and wines with exceptional aging potential.

Food Pairings

The wine's dark fruit depth and structured tannins make it a natural companion to a slow-braised short rib with truffle jus — the richness of the meat softening the wine's architecture beautifully. For a more composed option, consider a roasted rack of lamb with herbed crust and black olive tapenade, which echoes the cedar and savory tobacco notes on the finish. On a casual evening, a good aged cheddar or a charcuterie board anchored by a firm, funky comté will let the wine's mineral precision shine without much fuss.
