Winemaking

CVNE—Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España—has been a pillar of Rioja since 1879, blending traditional winemaking methods with modern precision. The house philosophy centers on letting the terroir and the tempranillo grape speak for themselves, using measured oak aging to enhance rather than dominate the wine's natural character.

Tasting Notes

This is a textbook expression of Rioja's elegant side. Bright red fruit aromas—cherry and strawberry—mingle with whispers of vanilla and subtle earth, while the oak remains in the background where it belongs. On the palate, you'll find ripe cherry and plum balanced by fine-grained tannins that give structure without heaviness, finishing clean and lingering with a pleasant spice note that extends the experience.

Producer

CVNE operates one of Rioja's most respected estates, with deep roots in the region's winemaking culture and access to some of its finest vineyard parcels. The house has maintained consistent quality across multiple price points for over a century, earning its reputation through patience—their wines are aged in barrel and bottle before release, ensuring they arrive ready to drink yet built to evolve.

Terroir

Rioja's Alavesa subregion, where CVNE sources much of its fruit, benefits from Atlantic influences that moderate summer heat and encourage fresher, more elegant wines than the warmer south. The alluvial and limestone soils contribute mineral backbone and structure, while the moderate continental climate—with cool nights—allows tempranillo to achieve ripe fruit without excessive alcohol.

Food Pairings

This wine pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops brushed with rosemary and garlic, or a simple chorizo and manchego plate with crusty bread. For something more refined, try it alongside pan-seared duck breast with a cherry gastrique—the wine's cherry notes and fine tannins will cut through the richness while the acidity cleanses the palate between bites.
