Kristallberg shows how much Pinot Bianco can carry when the vineyard and élevage are built for depth. Elena Walch established the cuvée from high-altitude parcels around 600 meters to preserve freshness as Alto Adige grew warmer, then fermented and aged the wine in large casks for greater structure and length. The 2022 is now moving into an especially compelling stage, with the fruit, mineral notes, and smoky cask influence beginning to settle together.
Why We Love It
Pinot Bianco is often treated as a quiet, easy white, but Kristallberg shows its capacity for structure, development, and real staying power. The wine has enough depth to make the bottle part of the occasion, while its freshness keeps the experience precise rather than heavy. It is the one to open for a small celebration or an evening built around following a distinctive white as it changes in the glass.

Tasting Profile
Layered stone fruit, citrus peel, flint, smoke, and almond unfold across a firm, juicy palate.
- Aroma: white peach, pear, lemon blossom, flint, smoke, almond blossom
- Palate (Flavor): apricot, preserved lemon, candied pear, green walnut, salted almond
- Structure & Finish (Mouthfeel): medium-to-full body, sleek acidity, layered texture, long saline finish
Winemaking
Handpicked fruit is gently pressed and clarified at low temperature, preserving clean fruit and floral aromatics. Fermentation takes place in 25-hectoliter oak casks, building shape and gentle spice. Twelve months of aging in those same casks rounds the texture and extends the finish without turning oak into the dominant flavor. Bottle age has begun integrating the stone fruit, smoky notes, acidity, and salinity.
Serving & Pairing
Serve around 48-52°F. Give the wine 10-15 minutes in the glass rather than serving it ice cold.
Pair with roast chicken, richer seafood, hearty first courses, white meats, or fresh and Alpine-style cheeses.
Drinking Window
Drink now through 2030. The 2022 has moved beyond its tightest youthful stage and is beginning to show more integration, savory detail, and textural depth. Additional short-term aging should bring more nutty and smoky complexity, but the wine is already in a strong window for a premium dinner, celebration, or white-wine gift.
Vintage
A warm spring and dry, stable summer shaped the 2022 Alto Adige vintage. The season brought ripe fruit and breadth, while Kristallberg’s elevation helped retain the acidity needed to support its cask aging and continued development. That balance gives the vintage both immediate generosity and a firm line for further bottle age.
Estate Overview
Elena Walch became one of Alto Adige’s defining modern figures after releasing her first vintage under her own name in 1988. Her move toward lower yields, site-specific bottlings, and vineyard preservation helped change how the region approached quality. Kristallberg is especially representative of that continuing mindset: the estate identified a changing climate, moved Pinot Bianco higher, and created a wine with a clear long-term purpose.
Terroir (Place)
Kristallberg comes from handpicked parcels around 600 meters on a small mountain terrace between Tramin and Kaltern. The high-altitude position brings cooler conditions and stronger day-to-night temperature shifts than the valley floor, preserving acidity and aromatic definition. That freshness supports the wine’s weight, cask aging, and long savory finish rather than forcing the style toward lightness.
