Winemaking

Sektkellerei Szigeti is one of Austria's most respected dedicated sparkling wine houses, based in Gols on the shores of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland. Their focus is squarely on traditional-method and tank-method Sekt, applying a level of care and precision to Austrian sparkling wine that remains rare in the category. Szigeti has long championed indigenous Austrian varieties — particularly Grüner Veltliner — as ideal bases for serious sparkling wine.

Tasting Notes

This Sekt opens with the kind of fresh, lifted aromatics that make Grüner Veltliner such an interesting sparkling base — bright lemon zest, green apple, and a whisper of white pepper that's entirely characteristic of the variety. On the palate, the mousse is fine and persistent, carrying flavors of ripe white peach and citrus pith with a satisfying sense of energy and grip. The finish is clean and decisively dry, with a stony, almost chalky minerality that lingers well past the last sip. It's a wine that manages to be both refreshing and genuinely interesting.

Producer

Founded in Gols, Burgenland, Szigeti has built its reputation around Sekt as a serious, place-driven wine rather than an afterthought to still production. The winery works with grapes grown in the distinctive sandy and loamy soils surrounding the Neusiedlersee, a region better known internationally for its botrytized dessert wines but quietly excellent for sparkling production as well. Their commitment to Austrian varieties and consistent quality at an accessible price point has made them a benchmark producer within the Austrian Sekt landscape.

Terroir

Gols sits within the Neusiedlersee DAC in Burgenland, along the flat northwestern shore of Central Europe's largest steppe lake. The lake acts as a massive thermal regulator, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season in ways that benefit both ripeness and acidity — a combination that translates beautifully into sparkling wine with natural freshness and flavor depth. Soils here are predominantly sandy with loam and gravel components, contributing the clean mineral character that runs through this Grüner Veltliner Sekt.

Food Pairings

The wine's bright acidity and dry minerality make it a natural match for smoked salmon on dark rye with crème fraîche and capers, or a composed salad of shaved fennel, cara cara orange, and a light citrus vinaigrette. For something more casual, it's genuinely hard to beat alongside a bowl of lightly salted kettle chips and good company — the wine's crispness and fine bubbles handle the salt and fat with ease.
