Madson Wines Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2023/24

Winemaking

Madson Wines crafts Chardonnay with an eye toward balance and site expression, allowing the Santa Cruz Mountains' natural acidity and mineral character to shine through restrained oak handling. The approach honors the varietal's capacity for complexity without overwhelming it with new wood, resulting in wines that age gracefully and pair generously at the table.

Tasting Notes

This Chardonnay opens with inviting aromatics of green apple and citrus zest, with whispers of vanilla oak in the background. The palate is rich and creamy—almost silken—with flavors of stone fruit and a subtle buttery richness that speaks to thoughtful oak aging. A firm mineral spine runs through the wine, characteristic of the cooler mountain elevations, while the finish lingers elegantly with toasted hazelnut and a touch of salinity that keeps everything in balance.

Producer

Madson Wines operates as a focused producer within the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, a region known for smaller-scale operations that prioritize quality over volume. The winery's commitment to capturing the distinctive character of mountain-grown fruit reflects the broader ethos of Santa Cruz viticulture, where elevation and exposure create naturally balanced wines with pronounced acidity and mineral definition.

Terroir

The Santa Cruz Mountains appellation sits in the coastal ranges south of San Francisco Bay, where elevation—often 1,200 feet and higher—moderates summer heat and extends the growing season. The region's diverse soils, mixed granite and sandstone slopes, combined with cool afternoon winds and morning fog, create ideal conditions for Chardonnay. These cooler conditions develop crisp acidity and mineral complexity while allowing full phenolic ripeness, the hallmark of quality Santa Cruz Mountain whites.

Food Pairings

Serve this wine alongside pan-seared halibut with brown butter and capers—the wine's stone fruit and buttery notes complement the delicate fish beautifully. It's equally at home with a roasted chicken breast finished with a light cream sauce, or as a casual pairing with fresh oysters, where its acidity and mineral backbone cut through the brine and enhance the briny sweetness.
